The incidence of Urinary Stone Disease in Children is significantly increasing across worldwide. Turkey, India, Azerbaijan and Pakistan are some of those countries with high prevalence. Medical therapy may sometimes be sufficient for stone passage, but intervention may also be required. If untreated, infection, pain, fever and even renal failure can be seen in those children.
Nowadays open surgery is exceedingly rare method of intervention since many endoscopic treatment modalities are available with very high success rates.
Especially, with the development of the finer instruments, children at all ages can safely be treated with endoscopic methods. Laser technology has also a become a significant contributor. The success rates are now higher than 90% for all stones with any diameter and any location.
URETEROSCOPY: This is a kind of an endoscopic treatment method which allows us to reach the stone from the urethra. It is especially effective in stones located at the ureter. Additionally we are now able to treat the kidney stones by using the flexible technology. However if the stone is inside the kidney and larger than 2cm, percutaneous nephrolithotomy becomes the choice of treatment.
PERCUTANEOUS STONE SURGERY: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is another endoscopic treatment method especially for larger Stones inside the kidney. Basically, an instrument is inserted into the kidney thorough the flank region after a 1cm of incision. Then it allows us to fragment the stones in all over the kidney with very high success rates.
MICROPERC: Microperc is a novel percutaneous nephrolithotomy technique by using a very small needle with a diameter of only 1.6 mm. It allows the fragmentation of the stones throught the flank region but without making any incision. This technology is also available and effective to treat kidney stones in children.
